ALLEGIANT AIR

INTRODUCTION

Allegiant Air is an American low-cost airline headquartered in Summerlin, Nevada offering limited

passenger airline services focussing on smaller cities at low cost. The airline operates numerous

scheduled and charter flights. It is wholly owned by Allegiant Travel Company and it is the ninth-largest commercial airline in the United States when measured in terms of fleet size and

number of passengers carried. Allegiant serves a total of 117 destinations with its largest hubs in Las

Vegas, Los Angeles and several cities in Florida, including Orlando and Tama Bay. Maurice J.

Gallagher Jr. is the chairman and CEO of Allegiant Air.

HISTORY OVERVIEW

Founded in January 1997, under the name WestJet Express, by Mitch Alee, Jim Patterson and Dave

Beadle, the company went on to adopt its current name in the following year after several

trademark disputes with West Jet Air. Scheduled service began on October 15, 1998 and was

operating non-stop flights between Fresno and Las Vegas Burbank and Lake Tahoe. However, in

2000, Allegiant filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to high fuel cost. Maurice J. Gallagher

Jr. gained control of the business and under his supervision, the airline began to revive and grow

using a low cost model focussing on smaller markets. By 2004, Allegiant was flying from 13 small

cities to Las Vegas offering bundled air and hotel packages. In late 2006, Allegiant Air was listed on

the NASDAQ Stock Market. The airline celebrated 15 years of low cost leisure travel in 2014. It

launched its first flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico from Cincinnati, Orlando and Pittsburgh, the

airline’s first scheduled flight to the Caribbean in December 2016. As of November 2019, Allegiant

announced that they will be adding an additional base at Des Moines International Airport in Des

Moines, Iowa.
